Senior Ecologist

Overview

We are partnering with our client, a respected consultancy delivering cutting-edge urban sustainability and regeneration projects, to recruit a Senior Ecologist into their London team. This is an exciting opportunity to influence major city-scale schemes, advising on biodiversity, net gain, and nature-based climate resilience from the outset.

The London team works across a diverse project portfolio, taking a strategic and design-focused approach rather than undertaking significant overnight survey work. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on collaboration and enjoys shaping environmental outcomes at the project inception stage.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Ecologist, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting ecological site walkovers and identifying risks and opportunities.
  • Leading the production or review of ecological reports and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary project delivery and managing budgets effectively.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior team members to foster their professional development.
  • Advising clients on nature-based solutions and habitat enhancement strategies.
  • Participating in design workshops and presenting ecological input to stakeholders.
  • Assisting in the preparation of fee proposals and contributing to business development initiatives.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Substantial experience in UK ecological consultancy.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of legislation, planning policy, and protected species requirements.
  • Proficiency in UK Habitat surveys and condition assessments.
  • Strong experience in delivering Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) chapters, and ecology management plans.
  • A solid understanding of the Biodiversity Metric and statutory requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Associate or Full CIEEM membership (or equivalent).

Day-to-Day

Your day-to-day activities will involve:

  • Conducting site visits and ecological assessments to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality project outcomes.
  • Preparing and reviewing detailed ecological reports and assessments.
  • Engaging with clients to provide expert advice on biodiversity and nature-based solutions.
  • Participating in workshops to integrate ecological considerations into project designs.
  • Managing project budgets and timelines to ensure efficient delivery.
  • Supporting junior team members and contributing to their growth and development.

Benefits

Our client offers a competitive benefits package, including:

  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • A hybrid working model to support work-life balance.
  • Private medical insurance for your health and well-being.
  • Company pension and life assurance.
  • Income protection for added security.
  • A flexible benefits package tailored to your needs.
  • Early finish at 3pm on the last Friday of each month.

If you are an experienced ecologist looking to make a meaningful impact on urban sustainability and regeneration projects, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity. Join a team that values collaboration, innovation, and shaping environmental outcomes for the future.
