Associate Director of Ecology

Overview

Our client is seeking an Associate Director of Ecology to join their London team. This is a senior leadership role focused on overseeing ecological delivery, supporting team development, and contributing to the continued growth of the ecology function within a multidisciplinary consultancy.

This position is ideal for an experienced Principal or Associate-level ecologist looking to step into a role with broader technical, people, and commercial responsibilities.

Responsibilities

As the Associate Director of Ecology, you will provide senior leadership across ecological projects while supporting strategic direction and ensuring technical quality. You will collaborate closely with clients and internal teams to integrate ecology effectively into project delivery.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical and strategic leadership across ecological projects.
  • Acting as lead reviewer and signatory for Ecological Impact Assessments and associated outputs.
  • Overseeing Biodiversity Net Gain delivery across multiple projects.
  • Managing project programmes, budgets, and resourcing.
  • Supporting bids, tenders, and fee proposals.
  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Mentoring and developing ecologists at various career stages.
  • Contributing to internal systems, guidance, and quality standards.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to embed ecology into design.

Qualifications

This role is suited to individuals already operating at Principal or Associate level with strong technical credibility and leadership capabilities.

You will bring:

  • Significant experience in ecological consultancy.
  • A proven track record of delivering medium to large-scale projects.
  • Strong understanding of UK planning, EIA processes, and Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Confidence in client-facing roles with commercial awareness.
  • Experience reviewing and approving technical reports.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • A degree in ecology or a related discipline.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Desirable experience includes:

  • Involvement in NSIP or DCO projects.
  • Habitats Regulations Assessment experience.
  • Protected species survey licences.
  • Specialist expertise in botany or ornithology.
  • Chartered membership of CIEEM.

Day-to-Day

On a typical day, you will:

  • Lead and oversee ecological project delivery, ensuring technical excellence.
  • Review and approve Ecological Impact Assessments and other technical outputs.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively.
  • Engage with clients to provide strategic advice and maintain strong relationships.
  • Mentor and support the development of team members.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate ecological considerations into project designs.
  • Contribute to bids, tenders, and proposals to support business growth.
