Associate Ecologist – Nature and Biodiversity Team
Overview
Embankment Group is recruiting on behalf of our client for an Associate Ecologist to join their expanding Nature and Biodiversity team in Manchester. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and ambitious ecologist with strong technical and project leadership skills to deliver complex ecology and biodiversity projects, support strategic business development, and play a key role in mentoring and developing the team.
Responsibilities
As an Associate Ecologist, you will:
- Lead large-scale ecology and biodiversity projects from inception to completion.
- Manage budgets, client relationships, and ensure project delivery to the highest standard.
- Provide technical direction on Ecological Impact Assessments, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), and ecological management plans.
- Support business development through fee proposals, tenders, and strategic input.
- Mentor and line manage senior and principal ecologists within the team.
- Contribute to the wider environmental team on multi-disciplinary projects.
- Represent the business in client and stakeholder meetings.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Significant professional experience in ecology, including project and team management.
- Strong technical knowledge in biodiversity, BNG, and protected species legislation.
- Excellent report writing, communication, and client liaison skills.
- Proven ability to deliver high-quality ecological assessments and mitigation strategies.
- Full membership of CIEEM (or eligibility).
- A degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for site work.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with BREEAM ecology credits, Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA), or habitat management plans.
- Understanding of GIS tools for ecological mapping and assessment.
- Protected species licences (e.g., bats, great crested newts, dormice, or others).
Day-to-Day
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Managing and delivering complex ecological and biodiversity projects.
- Conducting ecological assessments and surveys, including BNG baselining and habitat classification.
- Preparing high-quality reports, ecological management plans, and mitigation strategies.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated environmental solutions.
- Mentoring and supporting junior team members to develop their skills and expertise.
- Engaging with clients and stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes.
