Overview

We are working on behalf of an established and well-regarded independent environmental consultancy to recruit a Consultant Ecologist for their growing team in Brighton.

Our client has been operating for over 25 years and has built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality ecological advice across the South East. Their Brighton office supports a wide range of projects, including residential and commercial development, renewables, habitat creation, mineral extraction, and locally focused schemes.

Responsibilities

As a Consultant Ecologist, you will play a key role in delivering ecological consultancy services across a variety of projects. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting protected species and habitat surveys.
  • Producing Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), and associated technical reports.
  • Supporting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments and mitigation strategies.
  • Liaising with clients, planners, and project teams to provide expert ecological advice.
  • Assisting with the development and mentoring of junior team members.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in ecology, biology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience conducting protected species surveys and UK habitat surveys.
  • A strong understanding of UK wildlife legislation.
  • Proven competence in report writing and client communication.
  • Working knowledge of QGIS and Microsoft Office.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
  • Membership of CIEEM (or working towards it).

Day-to-Day

Your day-to-day activities will involve a mix of fieldwork, reporting, and collaboration with colleagues across ecology, landscape, and heritage disciplines. You will have the opportunity to work on projects from the early planning stages through to delivery, ensuring a varied and engaging workload.
