Overview

We’re recruiting on behalf of an established multidisciplinary consultancy based in Winchester, seeking to appoint a Consultant Ecologist to join their growing ecology team. This is an excellent opportunity for an ecologist with approximately three years of consultancy experience to take on greater responsibility, broaden their technical expertise, and play a key role within a close-knit and collaborative team.

The consultancy offers a dynamic working environment, where ecologists collaborate closely with planners, architects, and urban designers. With a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from rural estates to residential and mixed-use developments across Hampshire, Berkshire, and Dorset, this role promises variety and professional growth.

Responsibilities

As a Consultant Ecologist, you will:

  • Conduct field surveys across a variety of habitats and species.
  • Deliver ecological appraisals and contribute to planning submissions.
  • Undertake initial bat surveys and protected species surveys.
  • Assist with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments and calculations.
  • Utilize GIS software for mapping and reporting purposes.
  • Support EPSM licence applications when required.
  • Liaise directly with clients on smaller-scale projects.
  • Collaborate with planners and architects to develop pragmatic solutions.
  • Prepare and finalize ecological reports.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience in ecological consultancy.
  • Proficiency in conducting preliminary ecological appraisals and protected species surveys.
  • Experience with bat surveys at an entry or intermediate level.
  • Understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) principles and associated tools.
  • Flexibility to work outside standard hours during peak survey periods.
  • A professional and pragmatic approach to consultancy work.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Desirable:

  • Possession of at least one protected species licence (e.g., GCN or bat Class I/II).
  • Experience with QGIS and the statutory BNG template.
  • Strong botanical knowledge.
  • Associate membership of CIEEM.
  • Experience supporting EPSM licence applications.
  • Degree or Master’s in ecology or a related discipline.

Day-to-Day

Your typical day will involve a mix of fieldwork and office-based tasks. You’ll conduct ecological surveys, analyze data, and prepare reports to support planning applications. You’ll also work closely with clients, providing expert advice and ensuring projects meet ecological and regulatory requirements. Collaboration with other disciplines within the consultancy will be a key part of your role, as you contribute to innovative and sustainable solutions for a variety of projects.
