Consultant Ecologist
Overview
Embankment Group is recruiting on behalf of a leading multidisciplinary consultancy seeking a Consultant Ecologist to join their Bristol office. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career ecologist looking to build technical expertise while gaining exposure to a diverse project portfolio across infrastructure and development sectors.
Responsibilities
As a Consultant Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in supporting and delivering ecological projects from initial survey stages through to reporting. Working alongside experienced professionals, you will contribute to project bids, conduct fieldwork, and take ownership of defined project tasks. Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting the delivery of ecological inputs across a variety of projects.
- Leading and assisting with habitat and protected species surveys.
- Producing Preliminary Ecological Assessments and Habitat Condition Assessments.
- Contributing to protected species reports and mitigation strategies.
- Engaging with clients at the project level and maintaining strong working relationships.
- Assisting with technical sections of bids and proposals where appropriate.
You will be entrusted to work independently within your level of experience, with the support of senior ecologists for complex decisions and technical reviews.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Ecology or a related biological science and have at least two years of relevant consultancy experience.
Key qualifications and skills include:
- Graduate or Associate membership of CIEEM.
- Strong knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and planning policy.
- Experience in leading surveys and producing technical reports.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to safe working practices in the field.
Desirable qualifications include holding a protected species licence, experience as an Ecological Clerk of Works, and exposure to larger infrastructure or development projects.
Day-to-Day
Your daily responsibilities will include:

- Preparing ecological reports and assessments.

- Engaging with clients to ensure project requirements are met.
