This is an opportunity to build your technical expertise, gain exposure to different aspects of ecological consultancy and work alongside experienced professionals who are committed to helping you achieve your career ambitions.
With a salary of £32,000–£40,000, an excellent time off in lieu (TOIL) scheme and a strong emphasis on flexibility and employee wellbeing, this role offers the opportunity to develop your career without compromising your personal life.
What’s on Offer?
-
Competitive Salary: £32,000–£40,000 depending on experience.
-
Excellent TOIL Scheme: Flexibility to take time back for additional hours worked, helping you maintain a healthy balance between professional and personal commitments, particularly during the busy survey season.
-
Training & Development: Ongoing investment in CPD, specialist training and developing your technical skills.
-
Clear Career Progression: Opportunities to take on additional responsibilities, develop specialist expertise and progress into more senior positions.
-
Generous Annual Leave: Holiday entitlement that increases with length of service.
-
Healthcare Benefits: Access to a healthcare policy supporting your wellbeing.
-
Varied Project Portfolio: Exposure to a range of ecological projects across different sectors.
-
Supportive Team Environment: Work alongside experienced professionals who actively encourage knowledge sharing, mentoring and collaboration.
-
Team Events: Opportunities to connect with colleagues through regular company-funded social activities.
The Role
As a Consultant Ecologist, you will be involved in delivering a diverse range of ecological projects, from initial site assessments and protected species surveys through to technical reporting, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments and ecological advice.
You will have the opportunity to take ownership of your work while benefiting from the guidance and support of more experienced colleagues.
Your responsibilities will include:
-
Undertaking Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), habitat assessments and protected species surveys.
-
Supporting and delivering surveys for bats, great crested newts, badgers and other protected species.
-
Completing BNG assessments, including habitat condition assessments and biodiversity calculations.
-
Preparing high-quality ecological reports and technical documentation.
-
Supporting project management, ensuring work is delivered to agreed timescales and budgets.
-
Providing ecological advice to clients and supporting stakeholder engagement.
-
Undertaking Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) duties where required.
-
Collaborating with colleagues from complementary environmental disciplines.
-
Developing your technical knowledge and gradually taking on greater project responsibilities.
About You
We would be interested in speaking with Ecologists who have gained experience within an ecological consultancy and are looking for an environment where they can continue learning and progressing.
Ideally, you will have:
-
A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
-
Previous experience undertaking ecological surveys and assessments.
-
Knowledge of UK protected species legislation and ecological planning requirements.
-
Experience preparing ecological reports and technical documentation.
-
An understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain and habitat assessment methodologies.
-
Strong organisational and communication skills.
-
A proactive approach to professional development and willingness to learn.
-
A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
Experience with protected species licences or specialist ecological disciplines would be advantageous, although candidates who are actively working towards developing these skills are also encouraged to apply.
Your Development and Future Career
One of the key attractions of this opportunity is the consultancy's commitment to helping its employees develop professionally.
Whether your ambition is to gain protected species licences, strengthen your botanical or habitat assessment skills, develop your experience in BNG, or progress towards Senior Ecologist and beyond, you will have access to opportunities that support your long-term goals.
You will be encouraged to broaden your experience, undertake relevant training and develop the confidence to manage increasingly complex projects.
Importantly, the consultancy recognises that career progression should not come at the expense of personal wellbeing. Its TOIL scheme provides a practical way to balance the demands of ecological fieldwork with time away from work, particularly during the busier months of the year.
