Responsibilities
As an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW), your key responsibilities will include:
- Coordinating fieldwork logistics and reviewing baseline ecological data.
- Preparing site reports, Environmental Management Plans, Species Protection Plans, and draft Habitats Regulations Appraisals.
- Delivering toolbox talks and providing on-site guidance to contractors.
- Representing the project at meetings and presenting relevant ecological information.
- Collaborating with project stakeholders to achieve objectives while maintaining high environmental standards.
- Utilizing tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, digital photography, and field technology to produce electronic outputs.
- Operating in diverse environments, including remote areas and active construction sites.
- Delivering ECoW services for both short- and long-term projects, which may involve extended hours and travel during the workweek.
- Supporting office management and administrative tasks as required.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring the following skills and experience:
- A minimum of 3 years of proven experience as an Environmental/Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW).
- A degree in Ecology, Environmental Management, or a related field.
- Familiarity with Scottish or UK environmental legislation.
- Membership in professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or the Association of Environmental and Ecological Clerks of Works (AEECoW).
- Strong knowledge of habitat and protected species ecology, including bats, badgers, otters, and water voles.
- Understanding of pollution prevention standards and current environmental legislation.
- A valid CSCS card or equivalent certification.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure and maintain accurate records.
- A full UK driver’s license is essential, and the ability to safely operate a 4x4 vehicle is desirable.
- Holding at least one protected species license is advantageous but not mandatory.
Day-to-Day
Your daily activities will involve:
- Conducting ecological surveys and audits on-site.
- Engaging with contractors and stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
- Preparing detailed reports and plans to guide project implementation.
- Traveling to various project sites across Scotland, often requiring overnight stays.
- Working independently or as part of a team in outdoor environments, including remote and challenging locations.
