Ecology Team Lead – North East Overview

Our client, a leading consultancy in the environmental sector, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Ecology Team Lead to head their North East ecology team. Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Development

  • Inspire, mentor, and support the professional growth of team members.
  • Oversee line management responsibilities, including timesheet approvals, pastoral care, and technical guidance.
  • Foster collaboration and effective communication within the team and with external stakeholders.

Client Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
  • Position the team as a trusted partner for ecological and nature-related services.

Project Leadership

  • Lead and manage complex ecological projects, ensuring high-quality delivery and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Provide expert input throughout the project lifecycle, from initial consultation to completion.
  • Support junior project managers with troubleshooting and guidance.

Technical Excellence

  • Deliver high-level technical guidance and ensure outputs meet rigorous quality standards.
  • Supervise and review the development of technical solutions and best practices.
  • Contribute to Ecological Impact Assessments (EIA), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA), and planning inquiries.
  • Share knowledge and expertise across the national ecology team.

Business Development

  • Contribute to the strategic growth of the ecology and nature division.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities, leveraging market insights and client relationships.
  • Lead and support the preparation of bids, tenders, and framework opportunities.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A relevant academic qualification in ecology or a related discipline.
  • Full membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • Chartered Ecologist or Chartered Environmentalist status.
  • Demonstrable experience in ecological consultancy and team leadership.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Day-to-Day
  • Lead and manage a team of ecology professionals, ensuring their development and well-being.
  • Oversee the delivery of a diverse portfolio of ecological projects, maintaining high standards and meeting deadlines.
  • Engage with clients to understand their needs and provide tailored ecological solutions.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the organisation on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Contribute to business development activities, including preparing bids and proposals.
  • Provide technical reviews and guidance to ensure the quality of project deliverables.
