Principal Aquatic Ecologist

Overview

We are working on behalf of a multidisciplinary environmental consultancy seeking a Principal Aquatic Ecologist to join its Manchester team. This is a senior appointment within a fast-growing northern ecology function, offering exposure to major infrastructure and regeneration projects.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to operate as a senior technical authority across aquatic and terrestrial interface projects, advising clients in the developer, utilities, and public sectors. You will also play a key role in team development, mentoring, and operational planning.

The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced consultancy environment, taking ownership of both project delivery and team growth.


Responsibilities

As a Principal Aquatic Ecologist, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading aquatic ecology surveys and impact assessments.
  • Providing input into Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA), Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA), and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) documentation.
  • Managing project programmes, budgets, and resourcing.
  • Acting as the named ecologist on mitigation licences.
  • Supporting business development and client engagement activities.
  • Reviewing technical outputs and ensuring quality standards are maintained.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Degree-qualified ecologist or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong background in UK habitat surveys and habitat condition assessments.
  • Experience applying Biodiversity Net Gain principles and using the Defra Metric.
  • Holder of a protected species licence.
  • Proficiency in GIS software.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Full membership of CIEEM or working towards it (desirable).

Day-to-Day

Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve:

  • Planning and conducting aquatic ecology surveys.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality environmental consultancy services.
  • Preparing and reviewing technical reports, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Engaging with clients to provide expert advice and build strong relationships.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior team members to foster professional growth.
  • Contributing to the strategic development of the northern ecology function.
