Principal Aquatic Ecologist
Overview
We are working with a leading environmental consultancy seeking a Principal Aquatic Ecologist to strengthen its growing London team. This is an exciting senior-level opportunity for an experienced technical lead who can combine aquatic ecological expertise with commercial awareness and team oversight.
Responsibilities
As a Principal Aquatic Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality freshwater and aquatic ecology projects across the water, infrastructure, development, and public sectors. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading aquatic and wider ecological survey delivery and impact assessments.
- Acting as the technical lead across complex and multidisciplinary projects.
- Overseeing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA), and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) inputs.
- Managing team resourcing and mentoring junior consultants to support their professional development.
- Preparing and reviewing proposals, as well as contributing to business development initiatives.
- Building and maintaining strong client relationships to ensure project success and long-term collaboration.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A degree in Ecology or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrable experience operating at a Senior or Principal level within the ecological consultancy sector.
- Holder of at least one protected species survey licence, with experience in holding mitigation licences.
- Strong knowledge of UK Habitat surveys, habitat condition assessments, and the Defra Biodiversity Metric.
- Proven experience in delivering Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) strategies.
- Proficiency in GIS software and its application in ecological projects.
- A full UK driving licence.
Day-to-Day
Your day-to-day activities will involve:
- Designing and implementing survey strategies for aquatic and freshwater ecology projects.
- Providing high-level advice and technical input across multidisciplinary programmes.
- Reviewing and approving technical reports, ensuring they meet client and regulatory standards.
- Collaborating with clients and stakeholders to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions.
- Supporting the strategic growth of the team and contributing to the development of new business opportunities.
- Mentoring and guiding junior team members to enhance their skills and expertise.
