Our client boasts a well-established ecology team in the East of England, collaborating on a diverse array of projects. Their work spans renewable energy (onshore and offshore wind, as well as solar projects), residential, commercial, and large-scale infrastructure ventures. They are at the forefront of delivering innovative solutions to support the UK's net zero ambitions by contributing to some of the largest renewable energy projects in the region. The Role
As a Principal Ecologist, you will play a pivotal leadership role, overseeing ecological assessments, client relationships, and team development. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing and delivering complex ecological projects, including Town and Country Planning Act submissions and Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs).
- Authoring and thoroughly reviewing technical outputs such as Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA), and Environmental Statement (ES) chapters.
- Guiding and mentoring junior team members, providing coaching and professional development mentorship.
- Engaging with stakeholders such as Natural England, local councils, and other key authorities to navigate regulatory requirements effectively.
- Leading Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments, interpreting metrics, and designing practical solutions for clients’ projects, both on- and off-site.
- Developing and implementing protected species mitigation strategies, including licences for species like bats, great crested newts, dormice, badgers, and water voles.
- Overseeing project timelines, budgets, quotations, invoicing processes, and resources.
The Ideal Candidate
Our client is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual with the following attributes:
- A degree (BSc and/or MSc) in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- Full membership with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
- Possession of at least one protected species licence (e.g., great crested newts or bats is strongly preferred).
- Proficiency in UK Habitat Classification, habitat condition assessments, and Biodiversity Metric calculations (FISC Level 4 accreditation is advantageous but not essential).
- Comprehensive understanding of UK wildlife legislation, ecological mitigation practices, and planning policy frameworks.
- Proven experience in protected species licensing, mitigation design, and Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) supervision.
- Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- A full UK driving licence with willingness to travel as required (occasional overnight stays may apply).

- Visiting sites to carry out ecological assessments and surveys.
- Preparing, finalising, and reviewing detailed ecological reports.
- Supporting and mentoring team members in developing their skills and expertise.
- Directly liaising with clients and key stakeholders to provide expert advice.
- Managing budgets, timelines, and client deliverables to meet project objectives.
- Crafting innovative ecological mitigation strategies to deliver on biodiversity and project goals.
