Principal Ecologist – Dublin

Our client, a globally renowned consultancy, is seeking a Principal Ecologist to join their Environment and Health division in Dublin. Responsibilities
As a Principal Ecologist, you will:
- Lead and manage small to medium-scale projects, with input on large-scale initiatives such as transport infrastructure developments.
- Act as the primary point of contact for project managers, clients, partner organisations, and sub-consultants.
- Plan and conduct ecological surveys, including habitat and species assessments, and produce high-quality reports.
- Design and implement ecological mitigation strategies.
- Liaise with ecological regulators and planning authorities to ensure compliance and best practices.
- Deliver technical expertise on complex projects, ensuring timely and budget-conscious delivery.
- Prepare fee proposals and assist with client relationship management.
- Supervise and mentor junior ecologists, contributing to resource planning and team development.
At the Principal level, additional responsibilities include:
- Effective resource planning and management of the ecology team within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment.
- Reviewing technical reports, including EIA chapters, HRA, and species licence applications.
- Driving business development initiatives and fostering strong client relationships.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and ideally ArcGIS.
- Familiarity with digital data capture techniques for ecological fieldwork.
- Extensive experience in fieldwork and the application of best practice survey techniques.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise documents.
- One or more protected species survey licences (e.g., bats) and experience with development licences.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant environmental and ecological legislation.
- Understanding of the planning systems in Ireland and Northern Ireland, particularly in relation to ecological integration.
- A full, clean driving licence and flexibility to undertake surveys during unsociable hours or work away from home when required.
Day-to-Day
Your daily activities will include:
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver impactful projects.
- Conducting ecological surveys and assessments in the field.
- Preparing detailed reports and mitigation plans.
- Engaging with clients, regulators, and stakeholders to ensure project success.
