Principal Ecologist – Brighton
Overview
We’re looking for an experienced and passionate Principal Ecologist to join a respected environmental consultancy based in Brighton. This is a chance to take on a leadership role within a forward-thinking organisation that’s dedicated to sustainability and creating meaningful ecological impacts.
What You'll Do
As Principal Ecologist, you’ll lead the ecological team and guide project success while contributing your expertise. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Manage a range of ecological projects, ensuring they’re delivered on time, within budget, and at the highest standards of quality.
- Offer strategic and practical ecological guidance to clients, internal teams, and other stakeholders.
- Plan and direct ecological surveys, assessments, and tailored mitigation solutions.
- Draft, review, and approve comprehensive reports, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs).
- Mentor and support junior team members, playing a key role in their professional growth.
- Build and maintain strong client partnerships, fostering trust and delivering value.
- Stay informed of UK ecological legislation, policy updates, and emerging best practices.
What We’re Looking For
- A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field (postgraduate qualifications are a plus).
- Membership (or eligibility) with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or another similar professional body.
- Proven experience in managing ecological projects and leading multidisciplinary teams.
- A deep understanding of UK wildlife laws, planning policy, and ecological survey techniques.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce polished reports and build strong relationships.
- A valid UK driving licence.

- Leading or supervising ecological fieldwork while ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
- Reviewing and refining technical deliverables to meet high-quality standards.
- Contributing to strategic project planning and business development discussions.
