Responsibilities

As a Principal Ecologist, you will play a key role in shaping the success of the ecology team and delivering high-quality outcomes for clients. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and managing complex ecological projects from inception to completion.
  • Providing technical expertise and ensuring the delivery of high-standard ecological assessments and reports.
  • Overseeing quality assurance processes and maintaining compliance with relevant legislation and best practices.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, offering expert advice and influencing project designs.
  • Mentoring and supporting early-career ecologists, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Contributing to the strategic growth of the ecology team and the wider organisation.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, you will need:

  • Extensive experience in UK habitat and protected species assessments.
  • A proven track record in report writing, quality assurance, and technical leadership.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and industry standards.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with confidence in client-facing roles.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and line management.
  • A degree in ecology or a related discipline (a postgraduate qualification is desirable).
  • Survey and/or mitigation licences (advantageous but not essential).
  • A proactive, flexible approach with exceptional attention to detail.

Day-to-Day

Your day-to-day activities will involve:

  • Managing and delivering ecological surveys, assessments, and mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Reviewing and approving technical reports and documentation.
  • Providing guidance and support to team members, ensuring their professional development.
  • Engaging with clients to understand their needs and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Staying up-to-date with industry developments and contributing to thought leadership.
