Principal Ecologist
Overview
We’re recruiting on behalf of an established environmental consultancy that continues to invest in its ecology capability across the UK. As part of this growth, they are looking to appoint a Principal Ecologist to be based in Abingdon, just outside Oxford.
This is a senior role for an experienced ecologist who enjoys leading complex projects, supporting clients through planning and consent, and playing an active role in developing people and technical standards within a consultancy environment.
Responsibilities
As a Principal Ecologist, you will be responsible for:
- Leading ecological inputs on complex projects, including T&CPA and NSIP schemes.
- Authoring, reviewing, and signing off technical reports such as EcIAs, HRAs, and ES ecology chapters.
- Managing project programmes, budgets, and financial performance.
- Providing senior-level advice to clients, planners, and statutory consultees.
- Leading discussions and negotiations with regulators and key stakeholders.
- Delivering Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments and shaping pragmatic delivery strategies.
- Designing and overseeing ecological mitigation, including protected species licensing.
- Supporting and mentoring junior team members through line management and training.
- Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
Essential
- Strong experience within ecological consultancy.
- In-depth understanding of the UK planning system and environmental legislation.
- Proven experience delivering EcIAs and BNG assessments.
- Competence in UK Habitat Classification and habitat condition assessments.
- Experience designing and overseeing ecological mitigation and licensing.
- Strong report writing, review, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while supporting team development.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites as required.
Desirable
- Experience working on NSIP or major infrastructure projects.
- FISC Level 4 qualification.
- Protected species survey licences, particularly for bats or great crested newts.
- Experience acting as Ecological Clerk of Works.
- Membership of CIEEM.
Education
- Degree or Masters in ecology or a related discipline.
- Membership of CIEEM.
Day-to-Day
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Acting as the technical lead on a diverse portfolio of projects, including renewable energy, infrastructure, and development-led schemes.
- Providing expert ecological advice to clients and stakeholders.
- Managing and coordinating project teams to ensure timely and high-quality delivery.
- Reviewing and signing off technical reports and assessments.
- Mentoring and supporting junior team members to develop their skills and expertise.
- Engaging with regulators and stakeholders to ensure compliance and successful project outcomes.
