Principal Ecologist

Embankment Group is recruiting on behalf of a leading multidisciplinary environmental consultancy for a Principal Ecologist to join a growing Leeds-based ecology team delivering nationally significant projects across the UK.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced ecologist to work on a diverse portfolio of renewable energy, infrastructure, residential, and commercial developments while contributing to environmentally responsible outcomes on complex and impactful projects.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering ecological advice on projects ranging from solar and onshore wind developments to large-scale infrastructure and mixed-use schemes. This position also offers the opportunity to mentor junior ecologists, support project strategy, and contribute to the continued growth of an established and dynamic team.


Overview

As a Principal Ecologist, you will manage multiple projects simultaneously, providing expert ecological advice and ensuring the delivery of high-quality outputs. You will oversee ecological inputs from feasibility through to planning and delivery stages, maintaining technical excellence and fostering strong client relationships.

Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing ecological workstreams across a diverse range of projects.
  • Preparing and reviewing Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) reports, Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs), and protected species documentation.
  • Supporting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) strategies and habitat assessment work.
  • Providing technical advice to clients, planning authorities, and stakeholders.
  • Managing project budgets, timelines, and resource allocation.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior members of the ecology team.
  • Contributing to fee proposals and tender submissions.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Proven experience managing ecology projects within a consultancy environment.
  • Strong understanding of UK ecological legislation, planning policy, and survey methodologies.
  • Experience with UKHab surveys and habitat condition assessments.
  • Knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain principles and ecological mitigation design.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality technical reports and review work.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required.

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • Protected species survey licences.
  • Experience acting as an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW).
  • Field Identification Skills Certificate (FISC) qualification or advanced botanical skills.

Day-to-Day

  • Provide expert advice to clients and stakeholders on ecological matters.
