Embankment Group is supporting an environmental consultancy with the appointment of a Principal Ecologist to join their growing team in Exeter.
This is an exciting senior opportunity for an experienced ecologist who thrives on leading projects, supporting clients, and mentoring team members. The role is ideal for someone who is confident in managing complex ecological work, providing technical direction, and contributing to the growth of a successful and dynamic ecology service.
ResponsibilitiesAs a Principal Ecologist, you will:
- Lead the delivery of complex ecological projects across various sectors.
- Manage project programmes, budgets, resources, and client expectations.
- Provide senior technical input into ecological assessments and mitigation strategies.
- Prepare, review, and sign off technical reports.
- Support Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments, and Habitats Regulations Assessments.
- Advise on Biodiversity Net Gain, protected species, and habitat-related matters.
- Oversee survey work, including UK Habitat Classification and protected species surveys.
- Act as a key point of contact for clients, planning authorities, and statutory consultees.
- Support bids, proposals, and wider business development activities.
- Mentor junior and mid-level ecologists, fostering their technical and professional growth.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the ecology team and the broader environmental consultancy offering.
To succeed in this role, you will need:
- A strong background in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in ecological consultancy or a similar professional environment.
- In-depth knowledge of UK ecology legislation, planning policy, and best practice guidance.
- Proven experience managing ecological projects from inception to completion.
- Excellent report writing, review, and quality assurance skills.
- Experience liaising with clients, local planning authorities, and statutory bodies.
- Strong survey skills, including UK Habitat Classification and protected species expertise.
- Full membership of CIEEM (or working towards this level).
- Protected species licences (desirable but not essential).
- Experience supporting tenders, proposals, or business development activities.
- A track record of mentoring or managing other ecologists.
- A collaborative approach and the confidence to work across multidisciplinary teams.
- A full UK driving licence.
