Principal Ecologist
Location: Newcastle
Salary: £47,500 - £53,000
A Principal Ecologist opportunity is available in Newcastle through Embankment Group.
This role would suit an experienced ecology consultant who is confident leading projects, advising clients and supporting the technical development of others. It offers the opportunity to work across a broad range of ecological projects while taking on a visible role within an established team.
Position Summary
As Principal Ecologist, you will lead ecological inputs across a varied project portfolio. You will be responsible for managing delivery, reviewing technical outputs, advising clients and supporting colleagues across the team.
The position will involve a mix of technical consultancy, project management, mentoring and commercial contribution.
Responsibilities
- Lead ecological assessments, reporting and mitigation work.
- Manage projects, budgets, deadlines and client expectations.
- Provide technical review and quality assurance.
- Advise clients on ecological constraints, planning issues and mitigation options.
- Support protected species and habitat-related work.
- Mentor junior and senior ecologists.
- Assist with bids, proposals and business development.
- Work collaboratively with wider environmental and design teams.
Requirements
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Strong experience within ecological consultancy.
- Experience leading projects and managing clients.
- A good understanding of EcIA, protected species, habitat survey and mitigation.
- Strong technical report writing and review skills.
- Commercial awareness and confidence managing project financials.
- Experience supporting or mentoring colleagues.
- CIEEM membership.
- Protected species licences or specialist technical expertise would be beneficial.
