About the Role
As a Principal Ecologist with our client, you will play a pivotal role in managing developments aligned with the Town and Country Planning Act and Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects. Your insights and expertise will directly contribute to sustainable and ecologically impactful outcomes for a wide range of projects.
This is your chance to prepare and review ecological reports, mentor emerging professionals, collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, and champion biodiversity and environmental initiatives. You will also have the opportunity to design and execute mitigation strategies for protected species, propelling ecological advancements forward.
Key Responsibilities
Within this role, you will:
- Lead and deliver complex ecological projects, maintaining close communication with planning authorities and clients.
- Prepare and review technical ecology reports, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA), and sections of Environmental Statements (ES).
- Provide expert mentorship and training to junior ecologists, fostering their professional growth.
- Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality ecological solutions for clients.
- Engage in consultations and negotiations with Natural England, County Ecologists, and Local Authority planning officers.
- Leverage Biodiversity Metric data to develop Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) initiatives.
- Oversee project timelines and budgets, including preparing fee proposals and financial monitoring.
- Design and implement mitigation strategies for protected species, such as bats, great crested newts, dormice, badgers, and water voles.
Desired Qualifications
Our client seeks a candidate with the following expertise and qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- Full or Associate membership in the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
- Possession of at least one protected species survey licence (e.g., great crested newts or bats highly advantageous).
- Proficiency in UK Habitat Classification and habitat condition assessments (training or FISC Level 4 desirable).
- A thorough understanding of UK planning systems, environmental legislation, and related policies.
- Significant experience designing and executing ecological mitigation and protected species licensing.
- Outstanding communication and time management skills to ensure smooth and efficient delivery of projects.
- A valid UK driving licence (insured for business use), coupled with flexibility to travel across London and occasionally beyond, including overnight stays.
