Senior Ecologist – Habitat Restoration

Overview
Embankment Group is recruiting on behalf of a leading environmental consultancy seeking a Senior Ecologist with expertise in habitat and vegetation surveys to support a diverse range of projects across the UK. This is a remote position, offering the flexibility to work from home while contributing to impactful ecological and environmental initiatives focused on habitat restoration and land management.
This role is ideal for an experienced ecologist with a passion for botany, habitats, and environmental data, who thrives in a dynamic environment that combines fieldwork, technical reporting, and project coordination.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality ecological consultancy services. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Conducting habitat surveys, including UKHab and preliminary ecological appraisals.
- Performing vegetation and botanical surveys, as well as mapping.
- Supporting habitat restoration design through field data collection, including assessments of soils, hydrology, and site conditions.
- Preparing technical reports, such as ecological assessments and monitoring strategies.
- Providing expert ecological advice to multidisciplinary project teams and clients.
- Coordinating ecological clerk of works (ECoW) activities as required.
- Assisting with incident response investigations and environmental assessments.
- Mentoring junior staff and supporting their development in field survey techniques.
- Contributing to proposals, tenders, and project quotations.
- Managing project workloads to ensure timely and successful delivery.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Approximately 4–5 years of experience in ecological consultancy.
- Strong knowledge of habitat surveys and vegetation assessment.
- Proven experience in producing ecological reports and interpreting environmental data.
- A solid understanding of habitat management and restoration principles.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- A degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- Proficiency in GIS and standard office software.
- A full UK driving licence.
This role will involve fieldwork across the UK, with occasional overnight stays depending on project requirements.
Day-to-Day
Your typical day as a Senior Ecologist will involve a mix of:
- Conducting fieldwork to gather ecological data and assess site conditions.
- Analyzing data and preparing detailed technical reports.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide ecological advice and input.
- Managing project timelines and ensuring deliverables meet client expectations.
- Mentoring junior team members and sharing expertise in survey techniques.
- Participating in client meetings and contributing to project planning.
