Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Ecologist to join a leading infrastructure company involved in delivering the West Midlands section of HS2. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the most high-profile construction projects in the UK, ensuring ecological best practices are implemented and habitats are protected throughout the build. Based on-site in Birmingham, you will play a pivotal role in driving nature-positive outcomes across a range of infrastructure developments, including bridges, tunnels, and viaducts.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Ecologist, your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading the implementation and monitoring of ecological mitigation measures to protect habitats and species during construction.
- Developing and overseeing adaptive management strategies to ensure compliance with ecological requirements.
- Providing expert advice on ecological matters to project teams and stakeholders.
- Managing ecological surveys, assessments, and reporting in line with UK environmental legislation.
- Collaborating with contractors and project managers to integrate ecological considerations into construction activities.
- Ensuring compliance with Natural England licensing and other regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A degree (or higher) in an ecology-related subject.
- Strong project management skills with experience in ecological mitigation.
- A background in infrastructure projects, ideally large-scale or highways.
- A protected species licence and experience as an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECOW).
- In-depth knowledge of UK environmental law and Natural England licensing.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Day-to-Day
Your day-to-day activities will involve:
- Conducting site visits to monitor ecological mitigation measures and ensure compliance.
- Coordinating with contractors and project teams to address ecological challenges.
- Preparing detailed ecological reports and documentation.
- Advising on adaptive management strategies to enhance biodiversity outcomes.
- Attending project meetings and liaising with regulatory bodies as required.
- Supporting junior ecologists and providing mentorship where necessary.
