Responsibilities

As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality ecological services. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing small to medium-scale projects and contributing to large-scale initiatives, such as transport infrastructure developments.
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for project managers, clients, partner organisations, and sub-consultants.
  • Planning and conducting ecological surveys, including habitat and species assessments, and producing detailed reports.
  • Designing and implementing ecological mitigation strategies.
  • Liaising with ecological regulators and planning authorities to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Preparing fee proposals and assisting with client relationship management.
  • Supervising and mentoring junior ecologists, contributing to their professional development.
  • Supporting resource planning and ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in ecological consultancy, including fieldwork and survey techniques.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook, with familiarity in ArcGIS and digital data capture techniques being advantageous.
  • A strong understanding of environmental and ecological legislation, particularly in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
  • One or more protected species survey licences (e.g., bats) and experience in holding or implementing development licences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise reports.
  • A full, clean driving licence and flexibility to undertake surveys during unsociable hours or work away from home when required.

Day-to-Day

Your day-to-day activities will involve:

  • Leading ecological surveys and assessments, ensuring adherence to best practice guidelines.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions for clients.
  • Preparing technical reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), and Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRA).
  • Engaging with stakeholders, including clients, regulators, and planning authorities, to provide expert ecological advice.
  • Mentoring junior team members and fostering a collaborative working environment.
  • Contributing to business development activities, including preparing proposals and building client relationships.
