Responsibilities
As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality ecological services across a range of projects. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading small to medium-scale projects and contributing to large-scale initiatives, such as commercial, residential, and transport infrastructure developments.
- Acting as the primary point of contact for project managers, clients, partner organisations, and sub-consultants.
- Planning and conducting ecological surveys, including habitat assessments (e.g., Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments) and species-specific studies.
- Designing and implementing ecological mitigation strategies to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Liaising with ecological regulators and planning authorities to secure necessary approvals.
- Preparing fee proposals and supporting client relationship management.
- Supervising and mentoring junior ecologists, while contributing to resource planning and team development.
Qualifications
To excel in this role, you will need:
- Proven experience in ecological fieldwork, including the application of survey techniques in line with best practice guidance.
- Proficiency in UKHab survey methodologies, habitat classification, and condition assessments.
- A strong understanding of biodiversity metrics and the ability to develop biodiversity enhancement plans.
- Familiarity with digital data capture techniques and GIS tools such as ArcGIS.
- Experience managing projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams to deliver Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise reports.
- A solid understanding of UK environmental legislation and planning systems.
- At least one protected species survey licence (e.g., bats) and experience with development licences is highly desirable.
- A full, clean driving licence and the flexibility to work outside standard hours when required.
Day-to-Day
In this role, your daily activities will include:
- Conducting ecological surveys and assessments across a variety of sites.
- Collaborating with clients, project managers, and regulatory bodies to ensure project success.
- Preparing detailed ecological reports and mitigation plans.
- Managing project timelines, budgets, and resources to deliver high-quality outcomes.
- Mentoring and supporting junior team members to foster their professional growth.
- Staying up-to-date with industry developments and contributing to the continuous improvement of ecological practices.
