Responsibilities
As a Senior Ecologist, you will:
- Conduct Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (habitat surveys and condition assessments).
- Undertake Biodiversity Impact Assessments and protected/priority species surveys.
- Prepare quotations, tenders, and detailed ecological assessments, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA).
- Lead field teams and manage projects, ensuring high-quality delivery within agreed timelines.
- Design and implement surveys, as well as secure European Protected Species Mitigation (EPSM) licences for protected species.
- Write comprehensive and accurate ecological reports for clients and stakeholders.
- Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and third parties to ensure project success.
- Travel to project sites across the UK, with occasional overnight stays, while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Qualifications
Essential Skills and Experience
- A genuine passion for ecology and the environment.
- Proven experience in phase 1 habitat surveys/UK Habs and protected species surveys.
- A survey licence for at least one protected species (e.g., bats, dormouse, great crested newts, barn owl, rare reptiles).
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to lead field teams.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills.
- Experience in designing surveys and preparing quotations for work.
- A full driving licence and access to a vehicle.
- Motivation to work independently and as part of a team, often in remote locations and during unsociable hours.
Desirable Skills
- Advanced expertise in a specialist ecological area (e.g., bats, dormouse, great crested newts, barn owl, rare reptiles).
- Membership of CIEEM (or eligibility to apply).
- A degree or equivalent qualification in an ecology-related discipline.
- Proficiency in QGIS or ArcGIS.
- Experience in mentoring and managing junior staff.
- A proven track record of generating new business and networking.
- Secured EPSM licences for protected species (e.g., great crested newts or bats).
Day-to-Day
Your typical day as a Senior Ecologist will involve:
- Planning and conducting ecological surveys, often in diverse and remote locations.
- Leading field teams and ensuring the smooth execution of projects.
- Preparing detailed ecological reports and assessments for clients.
- Liaising with clients and stakeholders to provide expert advice and updates.
