Overview

Our client, a leading environmental consultancy, is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Ecologist to join their dynamic Ecology team in Edinburgh. This is an exciting opportunity for a Ecologist individual with over four years of proven experience in ecological consultancy to contribute to a wide range of projects across various sectors.

As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality ecological services while working alongside a multidisciplinary team of Environmental and Ecology professionals. Responsibilities

As a Senior Ecologist, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and conducting targeted habitat and species surveys.
  • Producing high-quality reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals.
  • Designing ecological mitigation strategies and advising on their implementation.
  • Managing small to medium-scale projects, including budgets and deadlines, and contributing to larger projects with team support.
  • Liaising with ecological regulators, planning authorities, clients, partner organisations, and sub-consultants.
  • Delivering technical work within your areas of expertise on complex or challenging projects.
  • Preparing fee proposals and tender bid submissions.
  • Attending meetings and providing expert advice to clients and internal multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

To be successful in this Senior Ecologist role, you will need:

  • A relevant degree, with an MSc in an environmental/Ecology discipline being desirable but not essential.
  • Full or Associate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • A strong understanding of current environmental legislation, policy trends, and established ecological guidance.
  • Expertise in habitat and species surveys, assessment, and mitigation, particularly for bats, British mammals, GCN, or botanical knowledge.
  • Experience in writing or contributing to HRA, EcIA, and Ecology Chapters for Environmental Statements.
  • Proven project management skills, with a track record of delivering tasks on time and within budget.
  • Experience in Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) or working with site contractors to deliver on-site advice and mitigation.
  • Proficiency in GIS, QGIS, and QField.
  • A current CSCS card or equivalent.
  • Excellent field skills, verbal and written communication skills, and the flexibility to work unsociable hours or travel as required.
  • A full, clean UK driving licence.
  • A passion for mentoring junior staff is highly desirable.

Day-to-Day

Your day-to-day activities will include:

  • Conducting fieldwork for habitat and species surveys.
  • Preparing detailed ecological reports and assessments.
  • Collaborating with clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver project objectives.
  • Managing project timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Providing on-site ecological advice and mitigation strategies.
  • Contributing to the preparation of tenders and proposals.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior team members.
