Senior Ecologist – Derbyshire

Overview

We are recruiting on behalf of our client for a Senior Ecologist to join their growing team in Derbyshire. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced ecologist, ideally with a minimum of four years in consultancy, to play a leading role in delivering a wide range of ecological services. The successful candidate will work across all stages of project delivery, from initial scoping and surveys through to technical reporting and client engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver and review ecological reports including EcIAs, EIAs, and BNG assessments.
  • Prepare and manage European Protected Species Mitigation licences and related applications.
  • Oversee ecological input on multi-disciplinary projects alongside internal specialists.
  • Lead field surveys, data analysis, and interpretation activities.
  • Mentor and support junior colleagues within the ecology team.
  • Contribute to tenders, fee proposals, and client communications.
  • Maintain strong working knowledge of current legislation and planning policy.
  • Liaise effectively with clients, stakeholders, and statutory bodies.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • Minimum of four years’ experience within ecological consultancy or similar field.
  • Proven ability in technical report writing, including mitigation and BNG assessments.
  • Strong project management and client-facing experience.
  • At least one protected species survey licence (e.g. bats, GCN, dormouse).
  • Associate or Full CIEEM membership (or working towards).
  • In-depth understanding of UK wildlife legislation and planning frameworks.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience mentoring or managing team members.
  • Competence with GIS or other mapping tools.
  • Full UK manual driving licence and willingness to travel for surveys (access to company vehicles provided).

Day-to-day

As a Senior Ecologist, you will:

  • Lead ecological surveys and oversee data analysis and interpretation.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, including EcIAs and BNG assessments.
  • Manage and deliver projects, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and planning policies.
  • Collaborate with internal specialists on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members.
  • Engage with clients, stakeholders, and statutory bodies to ensure successful project delivery.
