Senior Ecologist

Overview

Our client is seeking a driven and experienced Senior Ecologist to join their expanding ecology team in Dublin. This is a permanent full-time role with hybrid working, offering the flexibility to split your time between home, site, and office. They are looking for an ambitious individual with a strong passion for ecology and a desire to develop their career within a dynamic and supportive consultancy environment.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in leading survey programmes, delivering biodiversity assessments, and managing a variety of national and local projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and managing ecological projects and tenders from inception to completion.
  • Overseeing project finances, resource allocation, subcontractor management, quality assurance, and client communication.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior ecologists while coordinating field survey teams.
  • Developing expertise in your chosen ecological specialism, such as ornithology, bats, freshwater, or marine ecology.
  • Scoping survey needs, designing survey strategies, and delivering fieldwork for EcIA, AA Screening, Natura Impact Statements, and biodiversity plans.
  • Producing high-quality technical reports and undertaking data analysis to a professional standard.
  • Conducting technical reviews of ecological reports prepared by colleagues.
  • Supporting business development, including preparing quotations and maintaining client relationships.
  • Acting as a key point of contact for clients and providing clear ecological advice.
  • Undertaking fieldwork, including out-of-hours surveys, travel, and overnight stays where necessary.
  • Ensuring effective communication within the ecology team and contributing to mentoring and knowledge sharing.
  • Staying informed on industry guidance and emerging ecological practices.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A degree in ecology, zoology, biology, or environmental science.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant ecological experience, preferably within consultancy.
  • Full driving licence and access to your own vehicle.
  • Membership of CIEEM appropriate to your experience level.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to mentor junior colleagues.
  • A proactive and organised approach, with a commitment to delivering high-quality work on time.

Day-to-Day

Your day-to-day activities will include:

  • Leading ecological surveys and fieldwork, ensuring compliance with legislation and best practices.
  • Managing project timelines, budgets, and resources to deliver successful outcomes.
  • Collaborating with clients and stakeholders to provide expert ecological advice.
  • Preparing and reviewing technical reports and biodiversity assessments.
  • Mentoring junior team members and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Attending training events and conferences to maintain professional development.
  • Contributing to business development efforts and maintaining strong client relationships.
