Overview
We are representing a respected independent consultancy seeking a Senior Ecologist to join their established Brighton-based ecology team. This role is part of a multidisciplinary business where ecologists collaborate closely with landscape architects, urban designers, and heritage specialists to deliver high-quality, well-considered development proposals.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in leading projects, balancing technical delivery, client engagement, and mentoring responsibilities. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading protected species and habitat surveys.
- Managing and overseeing Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs), and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) work.
- Acting as a key point of contact for clients and stakeholders.
- Supporting project resourcing and mentoring junior ecologists.
- Contributing to technical standards and best practices within the team.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be an experienced consultancy ecologist ready to take on greater technical and leadership responsibilities. You should have:
- Several years of consultancy experience in the UK.
- Strong habitat and protected species survey skills.
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation and planning processes.
- Confidence in leading projects and reviewing technical work.
- Experience using QGIS and producing high-quality reports.
- Membership with CIEEM (ACIEEM or above).
- A full UK driving licence.
Additional qualifications, such as protected species licences, FISC accreditation, or a technical specialism, would be advantageous but are not essential.
Day-to-Day
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Planning and conducting ecological surveys and assessments.
- Preparing detailed reports and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
- Liaising with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver project objectives.
- Mentoring and supporting junior team members to develop their skills and expertise.
- Contributing to the development of innovative and sustainable ecological solutions.
