Senior Ecologist
Overview
We’re recruiting on behalf of a well-established, independent environmental consultancy that continues to grow its ecology team across the UK. Due to an increasing workload in large-scale development and infrastructure projects, they are now looking to appoint a Senior Ecologist to be based at their Warrington office, with hybrid working supported.
This role is ideal for an experienced consultant who thrives on technical delivery, project coordination, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on complex schemes.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Ecologist, you will:
- Manage ecological workstreams on medium to large-scale projects.
- Coordinate survey programmes and review technical outputs.
- Author and review reports, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.
- Provide pragmatic ecological advice to clients and project teams.
- Support programme, budget, and quality management.
- Contribute to fee proposals and scopes of work.
- Oversee survey data interpretation and reporting.
- Support and mentor junior team members.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Solid experience within ecological consultancy.
- Proven involvement in development-led projects.
- Strong understanding of UK planning and environmental assessment processes.
- Experience delivering or contributing to EcIAs and BNG assessments.
- Working knowledge of UKHab and protected species surveys.
- Confident report writing and technical review skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Degree in ecology or a related discipline.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
- Experience with infrastructure or renewable energy projects.
- Exposure to NSIP or DCO schemes.
- Protected species survey licences.
- Botanical or ornithological expertise.
- CIEEM membership.
Day-to-Day
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Leading and managing ecological inputs across a variety of projects, from feasibility to planning and consent stages.
- Collaborating with planners, engineers, landscape architects, and other specialists to embed ecological considerations into project designs.
- Reviewing and authoring technical reports and assessments.
- Providing expert advice to clients and ensuring the delivery of high-quality ecological solutions.
- Mentoring junior team members and fostering a culture of learning and development.
