Senior Ecologist

Overview

We are representing a highly respected ecology consultancy seeking an experienced Senior Ecologist to play a key role in project delivery and team development. This position is ideal for a consultant who enjoys technical excellence but also wants broader responsibility across project management, client engagement, and mentoring.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Ecologist, you will:

  • Design and lead habitat and protected species surveys.
  • Produce EcIAs, PEAs, BNG assessments, and technical chapters.
  • Manage projects of varying scale from inception to completion.
  • Provide pragmatic advice to clients and project stakeholders.
  • Prepare and review licence applications and mitigation strategies.
  • Mentor and support junior ecologists.
  • Support business development and tender preparation.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A minimum of three years’ consultancy experience.
  • Strong UK habitat and species identification skills.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering EcIAs and technical reports.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and planning policy.
  • Experience managing clients and project budgets.
  • CIEEM membership or eligibility.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Additional experience in NVC, development licensing, BNG delivery, or GIS would be advantageous.

Day-to-Day

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Leading ecological surveys and ensuring high-quality data collection.
  • Managing project timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Collaborating with clients and stakeholders to provide expert ecological advice.
  • Reviewing and approving work completed by junior team members.
  • Preparing technical reports and contributing to licence applications.
  • Supporting the growth of the ecology team through mentoring and training.
  • Contributing to business development activities, including tender preparation.
