Senior Ecologist – Bolton Location: Bolton, Greater Manchester

Overview

As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in managing and delivering ecological input across a diverse portfolio of projects. You will work on complex, multidisciplinary assignments, including renewable energy schemes, major infrastructure projects, and residential developments. Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing ecological projects in line with your experience and expertise.
  • Producing and reviewing technical reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs), and Environmental Statement (ES) chapters.
  • Preparing and overseeing licence applications, including European Protected Species (EPS) mitigation licences.
  • Supporting resource planning and budget management to ensure project efficiency.
  • Assisting with fee proposals and tender submissions to secure new business opportunities.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior ecologists to foster team development.
  • Conducting ecological surveys as required and ensuring high technical standards across the team.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Solid consultancy experience across a range of ecological surveys and reporting work.
  • Proven experience managing projects from inception to completion.
  • Experience preparing licence applications, with at least one protected species licence (bat licence holders are particularly desirable).
  • Strong working knowledge of UK and European environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce PEAs, EcIAs, HRAs, and related technical documents.
  • Membership (Qualifying or above) with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Day-to-Day

Your typical day may include:

  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including planners, engineers, and landscape architects, to deliver integrated project solutions.
  • Reviewing and finalizing technical reports to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Leading client meetings to discuss project progress and address any challenges.
  • Mentoring junior team members and providing guidance on technical and professional development.
  • Conducting site visits and ecological surveys, as required, to gather critical data for project delivery.
  • Preparing fee proposals and contributing to business development initiatives.
