Senior Ecologist – Scotland

Embankment Group is proud to partner with a leading multidisciplinary environmental consultancy in their search for a Senior Ecologist to join their dynamic team in Scotland. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects across sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure, and the built environment.
As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality ecological services, managing projects, and mentoring junior team members. This position is ideal for an experienced ecologist who thrives in a role that combines fieldwork, technical reporting, and project coordination.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Ecologist, your key responsibilities will include:
- Managing the ecological aspects of projects and providing expert advice to clients and contractors.
- Designing and coordinating ecological survey programmes and mitigation strategies.
- Preparing fee proposals, scopes of work, and technical reports.
- Reviewing ecological reports prepared by colleagues and specialist subcontractors.
- Mentoring and supporting junior ecologists, including fieldwork supervision.
- Scheduling and managing survey programmes to ensure timely and budget-conscious delivery.
- Collaborating with other environmental disciplines, such as planning, hydrology, landscape, and environmental assessment specialists.
Qualifications
Essential:
- A degree in ecology, biological sciences, or a related environmental discipline.
- Proven experience in ecological consultancy within the UK.
- Strong understanding of ecological legislation and planning policy in Scotland and the wider UK.
- Proficiency in conducting a range of ecological surveys and habitat assessments.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate survey programmes and manage project workloads.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills.
- Experience mentoring or supporting junior ecologists.
- A full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
- Expertise in botanical surveys and habitat assessment.
- Experience conducting specialist fauna surveys, such as bats, birds, reptiles, amphibians, or mammals.
- Membership, or working towards membership, of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
Day-to-Day
Your daily responsibilities will include a mix of field-based and office-based tasks:
- Conducting ecological surveys, including ornithology, protected species, habitat, and botanical assessments.
- Coordinating and managing survey schedules, including travel and occasional overnight stays.
- Preparing detailed technical reports and mitigation strategies.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated environmental solutions.
- Supporting and mentoring junior team members to develop their skills and expertise.
