Senior Ecologist – Protected Species

Location: Remote | East of England, Midlands, London, South West

Overview
Embankment Group is proud to partner with a leading environmental consultancy in their search for a Senior Ecologist – Protected Species. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced ecological consultant to join a dynamic and collaborative team, contributing to a diverse range of environmental and development projects.

Responsibilities
As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality ecological services. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting protected species surveys and habitat assessments.
  • Preparing and delivering preliminary ecological appraisals and associated reports.
  • Coordinating ecological clerk of works (ECoW) supervision.
  • Supporting ecological impact assessments (EcIA) and environmental reporting.
  • Advising project teams on ecological risks, mitigation measures, and compliance with legislation.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior team members to develop their skills and expertise.
  • Managing ecological survey programmes and overseeing project workloads.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.
  • Assisting with tender preparation and contributing to project proposals.

Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in ecological consultancy.
  • Proven expertise in delivering protected species surveys and mitigation strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of ecological legislation, planning processes, and best practices.
  • Experience in writing ecological reports and technical assessments.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • A degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • Membership in a relevant professional body, such as CIEEM.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Possession of protected species licence(s) (desirable but not essential).

Day-to-Day
Your daily activities will vary, offering a mix of fieldwork and office-based tasks. You can expect to:

  • Conduct site visits to perform ecological surveys and assessments.
  • Analyse data and prepare detailed technical reports.
  • Collaborate with project teams to provide ecological advice and solutions.
  • Mentor junior colleagues, sharing your expertise and fostering their development.
  • Manage project timelines and ensure the delivery of high-quality outputs.
  • Engage with clients to understand their needs and provide tailored ecological services.
