Senior Ecologist – London

Embankment Group is proud to partner with a dynamic and growing environmental consultancy to appoint a Senior Ecologist to join their London-based team. This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role in delivering ecological expertise across a diverse portfolio of projects, including urban development, infrastructure, and renewable energy initiatives.
This position is ideal for an experienced ecologist seeking to step into a role with greater responsibility while continuing to develop their technical skills within a collaborative and supportive environment.
Responsibilities
As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a pivotal role in managing and delivering ecological services across multiple projects. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading ecological workstreams for a variety of development and infrastructure projects.
- Providing clear, practical advice to clients and project teams on ecological risks and solutions.
- Producing and reviewing technical reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), and species-specific surveys.
- Managing survey programmes, including logistics, resourcing, and seasonal constraints.
- Supporting project budgeting and contributing to fee proposals.
- Mentoring and guiding junior ecologists to support their technical and professional development.
- Collaborating with planners and other environmental specialists to deliver integrated project outputs.
This role will involve a combination of office-based work, site visits across the South East, and occasional travel to other locations as required.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A relevant degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- Eligibility for membership with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
- Strong experience in delivering ecological surveys and producing technical documentation.
- A solid understanding of UK planning policy and ecological legislation.
- Proven experience in coordinating fieldwork and managing competing deadlines.
- Competence in habitat classification and protected species work.
- Expertise in at least one survey specialism, such as bats, great crested newts (GCN), reptiles, or ornithology, is advantageous.
Day-to-Day Activities
Your daily responsibilities will include:
- Conducting field surveys and site assessments.
- Writing and reviewing ecological reports and impact assessments.
- Liaising with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to ensure project success.
- Planning and overseeing survey schedules, ensuring timely and efficient delivery.
- Mentoring junior team members and providing technical guidance.
- Contributing to multidisciplinary project delivery alongside other environmental specialists.
