Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Ecologist / Environmental Clerk of Works, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting on-site environmental and ecological compliance audits and providing advisory services.
  • Monitoring construction activities to ensure compliance with planning conditions, ecological management plans, and regulatory requirements.
  • Preparing and implementing site-specific Environmental Management Plans, Surface Water Management Plans (SWMP), and Pollution Prevention Plans (PPP).
  • Identifying ecological and environmental risks and recommending practical mitigation measures.
  • Supporting the delivery of projects within budget and on schedule by providing robust ecological and environmental oversight.
  • Liaising with clients, contractors, regulators, and stakeholders to ensure environmental compliance and project success.
  • Conducting habitat and protected species surveys, as required.
  • Producing high-quality technical reports and compliance documentation.
  • Mentoring and supporting team members, fostering professional growth and knowledge sharing.
  • Occasionally working off-site or outside regular working hours to meet project demands.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • A relevant degree in Ecology, Environmental Management, or a related discipline.
  • Practical experience in ecological survey techniques and mitigation.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Confidence working independently or as part of a team in outdoor and construction site environments.
  • Excellent time management and ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure.

Desirable (especially for senior roles):

  • Demonstrated experience as an Environmental Clerk of Works or similar, with on-site ecological advice and mitigation.
  • In-depth knowledge of protected species and habitats, along with appropriate legislation and regulations.
  • Familiarity with the implementation of environmental legislation, including UK Biodiversity Action Plans (BAP) and designations.
  • Practical knowledge of pollution prevention best practices.
  • Experience with regulatory frameworks such as CAR, SuDS, EIAs, and flood risk assessments.
  • CSCS card (preferably already obtained or willingness to secure one).
  • Ability to safely operate a 4x4 vehicle.
  • Membership of professional bodies such as CIEEM or AECoW.

Typical Duties

  • Carrying out ecological site surveys and audits to assess compliance and inform mitigation strategies.
  • Providing expert advice to clients on ecological and environmental considerations during construction.
  • Developing and enforcing measures to minimize environmental impacts during project delivery.
  • Supporting environmental and biodiversity net gain goals for a variety of projects.
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory and planning conditions through collaboration with project teams.
  • Supporting the training and mentoring of junior colleagues.
