Our client is looking to appoint a Senior Ecologist to join a growing ecology and biodiversity team in London.
This is a varied consultancy position offering the opportunity to manage your own projects, provide technical ecological advice and work alongside specialists across a wider sustainability and environmental team. The role would suit an experienced Ecologist who is comfortable balancing fieldwork, reporting, project delivery and client contact, while also supporting less experienced members of the team.
The role
You will work across a range of development and planning projects, taking responsibility for ecology inputs from initial survey and assessment through to reporting, recommendations and project delivery.
Typical responsibilities will include:
- Managing ecology and biodiversity projects from initial instruction through to completion.
- Preparing and reviewing Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), protected species reports and other ecological assessments.
- Delivering Biodiversity Net Gain assessments using the Statutory Biodiversity Metric.
- Producing habitat and BNG mapping using QGIS.
- Undertaking and leading UKHab, PEA, bat and protected species surveys.
- Providing technical input and QA on ecology reports and proposals.
- Supporting larger multidisciplinary projects alongside colleagues from other environmental disciplines.
- Attending client and project meetings and maintaining strong relationships with external consultants and stakeholders.
- Supporting, mentoring and potentially line managing junior Ecologists and graduates.
The original brief places particular emphasis on BNG, QGIS, PEAs, UKHab, bat surveys, technical reporting and supporting junior team members.
What our client is looking for
The successful candidate is likely to have several years' experience within ecological consultancy and be confident delivering projects with a good degree of independence.
Experience across the following would be particularly useful:
- Strong UKHab / habitat survey and botanical identification skills.
- Experience completing PEAs independently.
- Practical experience with Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and the Statutory Biodiversity Metric.
- Competence using QGIS to produce professional habitat and survey mapping.
- Experience designing or leading bat surveys.
- Knowledge of other protected species survey and assessment work.
- Strong ecological report writing and technical review skills.
- Good project management, client management and communication skills.
- Ability to organise competing workloads and deliver work to deadlines.
A relevant degree in ecology, biology, environmental science or a similar discipline would be expected. Protected species licences, bat or bird survey expertise and CIEEM membership would all be advantageous rather than necessarily essential for every applicant.
