Senior Ecologist / Botanist Overview

Our client, a leading consultancy with a multi-award-winning ecology team, is seeking an experienced Senior Ecologist / Botanist to join their established team in Bristol. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in delivering complex ecological projects, leading botanical surveys, and contributing expert input into environmental assessments. You will have the chance to shape projects from inception to completion while mentoring and supporting the development of junior colleagues.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Ecologist / Botanist, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading botanical and habitat surveys, including complex vegetation assessments and mapping.
  • Providing specialist botanical input into Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA), and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.
  • Preparing and reviewing technical reports, work plans, and ecological chapters for planning submissions.
  • Managing small project teams to ensure delivery meets time, quality, and budget standards.
  • Mentoring, training, and guiding early-career staff to support their professional growth.
  • Liaising with clients, regulators, and stakeholders, presenting clear and professional advice.
  • Contributing to business development through support for bids, tenders, and client relationships.
  • Maintaining high standards of health and safety in both field and office environments.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills:

  • A degree (BSc/MSc) in Ecology, Botany, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong expertise in UK botany, including habitat classification and plant identification using keys.
  • Proven experience in ecological consultancy, ideally 5+ years, with a focus on botanical work.
  • Experience in delivering ecological inputs to EIA, HRA, or BNG projects.
  • Effective project and team management skills, with excellent organisational abilities.
  • Proficiency in GIS, data analysis, and technical report writing.
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for site work.
Day-to-Day

On a typical day, you will:

  • Conduct and oversee botanical and habitat surveys in the field.
  • Analyse data and prepare detailed technical reports for clients and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to deliver high-quality ecological assessments.
  • Provide mentoring and training to junior team members, fostering their development.
  • Attend client meetings and liaise with regulators to provide expert ecological advice.
  • Contribute to project planning and ensure all deliverables meet agreed timelines and budgets.
