Senior Ecologist

Embankment Group is recruiting on behalf of a well-established environmental consultancy seeking a Senior Ecologist to join their Southampton office. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of projects spanning the renewables, infrastructure, and development sectors.


Overview

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Ecologist to take a leading role in delivering ecological surveys and technical inputs across a range of complex projects. This role offers the chance to work alongside a multidisciplinary team of environmental specialists, contributing to impactful projects in the power, built environment, and infrastructure sectors.


Responsibilities

As a Senior Ecologist, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting and delivering ecological surveys and supporting mitigation strategies.
  • Managing ecological workstreams on development and infrastructure projects.
  • Preparing ecological reports and reviewing technical outputs.
  • Developing scopes of work and fee proposals.
  • Supervising and mentoring junior ecologists.
  • Planning and coordinating ecological survey programmes.
  • Collaborating with other technical teams, including planning, landscape, hydrology, noise, and air quality experts.
  • Advising clients and contractors on ecological aspects of projects.

This role will involve fieldwork in various environments, requiring travel, occasional extended field days, and work in all weather conditions.


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in Ecology, Biological Science, or a related environmental discipline (MSc desirable).
  • Eligibility for Qualifying or Associate level membership with CIEEM.
  • Demonstrable experience conducting ecological surveys and assessments.
  • Knowledge of UK ecological legislation and environmental policy.
  • Experience managing projects, budgets, and client relationships.
  • Expertise in habitat surveys or protected species work (e.g., bats, reptiles, amphibians, water voles, otters, birds, or invertebrates).
  • Strong theoretical grounding in ecology and environmental assessment.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Day-to-Day

Your day-to-day activities will include:

  • Leading field surveys and mitigation projects, including ornithology, protected/notable mammals, and habitats.
  • Managing and scheduling ecological survey work packages to ensure timely and budget-conscious delivery.
  • Preparing and reviewing technical reports and proposals.
  • Mentoring and supervising junior team members, fostering their professional growth.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated project solutions.
  • Engaging with clients and stakeholders to provide expert ecological advice.
