Responsibilities

As a Senior Ornithologist, you will:

  • Lead and manage ornithological surveys, including winter, passage, and breeding bird surveys.
  • Provide expert advice on the potential impacts of developments on bird populations and habitats.
  • Manage and deliver multiple projects to high client expectations within fixed deadlines.
  • Liaise confidently with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Mentor and support junior team members, fostering their professional growth.
  • Review technical reports and ensure the delivery of high-quality project outputs.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative solutions for complex ecological challenges.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the business to deliver integrated, multidisciplinary projects.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A relevant degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in ornithology, ideally within a consultancy setting.
  • Strong field skills and a desire to further develop your technical expertise.
  • Membership of (or eligibility to join) the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • A full UK driving licence and legal entitlement to work in the UK.
  • Excellent project management skills and financial awareness.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients and stakeholders.

Day-to-Day

Your typical day may include:

  • Conducting field surveys to assess bird populations and habitats.
  • Preparing technical reports and reviewing project deliverables.
  • Attending client meetings to discuss project progress and provide expert advice.
  • Mentoring junior team members and providing constructive feedback.
  • Collaborating with colleagues from other disciplines to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Managing project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure successful delivery.
  • Participating in training and development opportunities to enhance your skills.
