Responsibilities

As a Senior Ecologist with Ornithology Expertise, you will:

  • Lead and manage ornithological surveys, including winter, passage, and breeding bird surveys.
  • Deliver high-quality ecological assessments and reports for projects across sectors such as residential, energy, defence, and transport.
  • Liaise confidently with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to provide expert ecological advice.
  • Manage multiple projects, ensuring delivery within deadlines and to client expectations.
  • Mentor and support junior team members, fostering their technical and professional development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative approaches to ecological challenges.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in ornithological surveys and ecological consultancy.
  • Membership of (or eligibility to join) the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • Strong project management skills, including financial awareness and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A full UK driving licence and legal entitlement to work in the UK.
  • Additional ecological skills outside of ornithology (desirable).

Day-to-Day

Your typical day may include:

  • Conducting field surveys to assess the impact of developments on bird populations and habitats.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on technical reports prepared by junior team members.
  • Attending client meetings to discuss project requirements and progress.
  • Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver holistic project solutions.
  • Managing project timelines, budgets, and resources.
  • Participating in internal training sessions to enhance your technical and project management skills.
  • Supporting the team in achieving high standards of ecological consultancy.
