Responsibilities
As a Senior Ornithologist, you will:
- Lead and manage ornithological surveys, including winter, passage, and breeding bird surveys.
- Provide expert advice on the potential impacts of developments on bird populations and habitats.
- Manage and deliver multiple projects to high client expectations within fixed deadlines.
- Liaise confidently with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Mentor and support junior team members, fostering their professional growth.
- Review technical reports and ensure the delivery of high-quality project outputs.
- Contribute to the development of innovative solutions for complex ecological challenges.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the business to deliver integrated, multidisciplinary projects.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A relevant degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
- Proven experience in ornithology, ideally within a consultancy setting.
- Strong field skills and a desire to further develop your technical expertise.
- Membership of (or eligibility to join) the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
- A full UK driving licence and legal entitlement to work in the UK.
- Excellent project management skills and financial awareness.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients and stakeholders.
Day-to-Day
Your typical day may include:
- Conducting field surveys to assess bird populations and habitats.
- Preparing technical reports and reviewing project deliverables.
- Attending client meetings to discuss project progress and provide expert advice.
- Mentoring junior team members and providing constructive feedback.
