Senior Nature & Biodiversity Lead (BNG) – UK

Embankment Group are recruiting on behalf our client for a pivotal senior leadership role within their UK Nature and Biodiversity team. This is a unique opportunity to shape the strategic growth of nature-based solutions and ecosystem services in the UK, with a particular focus on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), Blue Green Infrastructure, and Natural Capital service offerings.

Overview

As the Senior Nature & Biodiversity Lead, you will oversee the strategic direction and growth of the UK Nature and Biodiversity team. You will play a key role in delivering nature-based solutions, supporting UK planning projects, and developing corporate biodiversity strategies. This position requires a strong understanding of the evolving ecological landscape, particularly around Biodiversity Net Gain, and the ability to lead and inspire a team to achieve exceptional results.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the growth strategy for the UK Nature and Biodiversity team.
  • Lead and mentor a team of ecology professionals, fostering an innovative and collaborative team culture.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex UK projects, with a focus on Biodiversity Net Gain and related services.
  • Identify and secure new project opportunities, ensuring high-quality and profitable outcomes.
  • Act as a technical and advisory figurehead across multiple service offerings, including Blue Green Infrastructure and Natural Capital.
  • Expand corporate biodiversity and nature-positive work, including BNG-related frameworks and reporting.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, delivering holistic approaches to address the climate and nature crisis.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with a proven track record in ecological leadership and a passion for driving positive environmental outcomes. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Proven success in growing and leading teams or service offerings.
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring, and fostering a positive team culture.
  • Strong awareness of recent developments in the ecological sector, including Biodiversity Net Gain, off-site credits, and nature-based solutions.
  • In-depth knowledge of applying Biodiversity Net Gain in relation to ecosystem services and communicating biodiversity benefits to clients.
  • Expertise in advising on ecological impacts, EIAs, habitat management and monitoring, and HRAs, particularly in infrastructure projects (e.g., roads, rail).
  • Experience in corporate biodiversity strategy, nature-related disclosure frameworks, and reporting (e.g., TNFD, CSRD, SBTN).

Day-to-Day

  • Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to deliver innovative nature-based solutions.
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance on complex ecological projects.
  • Mentor and support team members, fostering professional growth and development.
  • Develop strategies to expand service offerings and secure new business opportunities.
  • Stay informed on sector developments and ensure the team remains at the forefront of ecological innovation.
  • Represent the organization as a thought leader in biodiversity and nature-positive initiatives.
